Ankle Arthrosis / Ankle Arthritis / TAR

TAR stands for Total Ankle Replacement / TAA stands for Total Ankle Arthroplasty.

Joint degeneration of the upper ankle is mostly caused by accidents, Rheumatoid arthritis; joint destruction due to deformities, etc. An improvement can be mostly achieved through an operation.

We need to have information about soft tissue conditions, bone structure and the degree of degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the Foot and Ankle. We will then be able to provide a good and safe recommendation about possible procedures. If surgery is required, a suitable method will be researched, discussed and implemented. But a fusion procedure of the ankle joint is rarely necessary. The decision can only be carried-out once a medical examination and diagnosis has taken place.

We are currently the only world-wide clinic that offers the minimal-invasive TAR technique. At the Foot and Ankle Centre Berlin, you could be treated with anatomical ankle prosthesis or depending on the severity of the case; “custom-made” ankle prosthesis will be inserted. As a clinic that performs such specialized procedures, we are equipped with high quality technical facilities and our staff has the highest surgical experience.

The surgical costs are usually paid by the health insurance. However the travel cost should be paid by the patient. The hospital recovery period varies between 5-8 days. This should be taking into consideration when planning the travel arrangements. On average, the post-operative treatment period last at least 6-12 weeks.

Before an operation can be scheduled, an introductory appointment should be scheduled during our consultation hours. In certain cases, only one appointment is sufficient to conduct the examination and to answer necessary questions and concerns.

An appointment could either be made via e-mail or telephonically. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Service Team.
